ABC OF INGREDIENTS

Ever wondered about some of the brilliant, all-natural ingredients that make LUMI products so effective? Look no further! Here, we take a dive into the many wonderful plants and minerals that our team of skincare experts so lovingly combine into your favourite skin saviours.

We don’t just want to show off, though. At LUMI, we’ve made a commitment to sustainable business practices that keep emissions low and natural environments thriving. And as we detail in Our Sustainable Philosophy, sustainability without transparency is just empty words! That’s why we’re keen to show you exactly what goes into each and every LUMI product.

We’ve split our ingredients into three broad categories – the ingredients we grow and forage ourselves, those grown here in Estonia by our trusted partners, and innovative suppliers from around Europe on the cutting edge of scientific research.

From Seed to Bottle

There is no better way to keep standards high and supply chains short than to grow and pick your own ingredients! That’s the mantra we take here at LUMI, and we’re so proud of the amount of plants that we nurture from seed through to finished product.

Of course, we can always do more, and we’re always on the lookout for ways to grow more of our own plant-life. We hope as LUMI grows and the world wakes up to the importance and efficacy of organic skincare, we can keep increasing the amount of ingredients grown and picked in-house.

Finola Hemp

Hemp forms the backbone of so much that we do here at LUMI, so it only made sense to grow this brilliant plant ourselves! We cultivate the Finola variety of hemp, lauded for its versatility, strength, and high nutritional value. Finola is the base of many of our creams, balms, and other products. If it has a LUMI label, there’s a good chance that it contains hemp!

But Finola isn’t just a fantastic choice for organic skincare. It is also an environmental boon, serving as a natural form of carbon capture and enriching soil that it’s planted in, too! One hectare of Finola hemp removes up to 22 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere per year, making it one of the most efficient natural air purifiers found across the globe.

Estonia’s Finest

If we can’t grow or forage for an ingredient ourselves, our first port-of-call is always the country we are honoured to call our home – the endlessly brilliant and beautiful Estonia! Domestic production means that, alongside supporting local growers, we can thoroughly ensure the highest standards of quality and keep those dreaded supply chain carbon emissions as low as possible.

Below is just a small selection of the incredible variety of plants that we procure daily from our trusted network of Estonian suppliers. The freshness and quality of domestic produce simply can’t be beaten!

Birch

Birch has been a trusted part of Estonian health and wellness for millennia. Whether through sauna whisks, extracted sap, or other uses, it sometimes seems as if birch was designed especially to help us humans look and feel better!

Birch leaves are harvested before Midsummer to ensure their therapeutic properties are most potent, and are stored for use in production all year round. Experience the brilliantly restorative power of birch for yourself in LUMI products such as Refreshing Birch Mist and FLIRT Hyaluronic Acid Hair-Spritzer.

International Innovation

Whilst we try to support Estonian growers as much as we can, and always seek to keep our supply chains as short as possible, sometimes our search for natural ingredients at the cutting edge of scientific research takes us further afield.

We seek the most innovative and sustainable partners from all over Europe and combine their offerings to create truly groundbreaking skincare products. We’re exceptionally proud of the work we do at LUMI, and our international suppliers are a huge part of that!

Diatom Shells

You might not have heard of diatoms, but the world wouldn’t survive without them. Diatoms are microscopic forms of algae that are estimated to generate up to half of all the oxygen produced on the planet each year!

Not only are diatoms brilliant for the global ecosystem, but their shells are also a fantastic source of silica. Silica is used in lots of skincare products: as an abrasive in scrubs, as a bulking agent, and much more.

Whilst it is one of the world’s most abundant minerals, the extraction of silica has a high carbon footprint thanks to the machinery needed to mine it from the ground and the chemical treatments required afterward. Diatoms, on the other hand, provide us with chemically identical silica, without any of the nasty side-effects. In fact, diatoms are a natural carbon dioxide sink!

LUMI sources all its silica from diatom shells and puts it to use in products such as Iconic Well-aging Treatment and Iconic Peptide Treatment. So, you can rest assured that your purchase is fighting climate change, rather than contributing to it! And as if that wasn’t enough of a benefit, studies also suggest that diatom shells have been shown to block environmental pollutants from reaching the skin and help skin maintain optimal moisture levels. What’s not to love?

Plant Stem Cells

Nothing better encapsulates LUMI’s commitment to bringing our customers the latest and greatest in biological skincare research quite like our use of plant stem cells. This incredibly exciting avenue of science has only become commercially available in the last few years, and we’re incredibly proud to be some of the very first skincare companies worldwide making use of these revolutionary ingredients!

Our Sunbrero SPF-boosting Essence uses two different forms of plant stem cells to nourish and protect the skin and its microflora, both provided to us by the industry-leading geniuses over at Vytrus Biotech!

Photobiome™ prebiotic active ingredient protects helpful bacteria on the surface of skin from the effects of UV damage, ensuring your microbiome is not harmed by sun exposure and can assist your skin in its regeneration processes, as well as assisting in moisturising the skin and preventing wrinkle formation.

Quora Noni™ hacks into the communication networks used by microbial communities to bio-engineer your microbiome to promote helpful bacteria and minimise the presence of unwanted microbes. This high-tech, all-natural active ingredient helps rebalance your skin’s microflora, allowing it to better focus on protecting and nourishing your skin!

Willow Bark Extract

Willow bark is a natural source of salicylic acid, which is effective at exfoliating the skin, reducing oiliness, and unblocking clogged pores. Salicylic acid can also reduce swelling and redness, and is used to treat and prevent flare-ups of acne, eczema, psoriasis and rosacea. It’s a natural phenomenon!

All of our willow bark extract is sourced from growers in Estonia. Some great examples of LUMI products that utilise willow bark extract include Tundra AHA-BHA Cleansing Milk, Tundra Yarrow Mist, and Tundra AHA-BHA Moisturising Cream.
